Air Filtration
Proper filtration of the air that passes through your homes comfort system has a direct impact on your families comfort, health, and the cleanliness of your home. Basic air filters are designed to protect your comfort system and not the people served by the equipment.
All comfort system air filters have a "pressure" penalty or resistance to airflow that it adds to the total system pressure. If the filter you choose slows the air down too much (i.e. too great a resistance to airflow), the possible result can be a poorly operating system that costs too much to operate. Even the correct filter for your comfort system can cause the same problems if it gets too dirty. Therefore, the message is to change your filter regularly.
"Media Style" Throwaway Filters
Not all air filters are alike and not all are equal. Prices on air filters can vary from $1.50 to as much as $65 dollars each. Media style filters have an effectiveness ratio of about 5% to 40% depending on its MERV#. The higher the MERV# the better the capture ratio of the filter, and the more expensive it is. Better filters will actually have this MERV# printed on it.Are the more expensive ones better? Are they worth it?
Did you know that the wrong filter in your comfort system could actually damage it severly!
How often should you change your filter? Should you change even if it doesn't look dirty?
Air filtration brings with it many questions and many challenges. Call us if you are unsure of the answer to any of these questions
The "So-Called" Better Electro-Static Filter
These filters are sold in retail stores, they are the "lifetime" filters that you clean and then reinstall. They are supposed to save you a lot of money, which is why you bought them. They actually are the WORST POSSIBLE CHOICE, in our opinion. They bring with them very high "pressure" penalty and when they get dirty, they can stop your comfort system dead in its tracks! If you have one, our advice is to get rid of it ASAP, or call us when your system dies so we can repair it for you. These filters can have an effectiveness ratio of up to 50%, but the "pressure drop" penalty they bring with them is not worth it.
Eliminate Your Indoor Allergy Problems OVERNIGHT with an Electronic Air Cleaner
These filtering systems produce some of the highest levels of air cleanliness available. They are expensive, up to $2,000 and they do need to be cleaned every month. For people with allergies or breathing problems, this is the way to go! Proper location of these electronic air cleaners is very important to customer satisfaction. The downside of these systems can be the popping sounds they make sometimes as they do their job. These air cleaners can have a filter effectiveness ratio of up to 99%.
