Every homeowner thinks they know their air conditioner well. However, there are a number of myths that circulate about air conditioning when it comes to trying to save precious dollars while running it. If you’ve taken any of the following myths as fact, it is probably costing you money.

“Yearly maintenance isn’t needed”

Never fall into that “if it isn’t broke” mentality. Regular maintenance makes sure your air conditioner doesn’t break. In fact, ask your J.R. Perkins Heating & Cooling technician to compare a maintenance bill to a repair bill and you will know automatically which one is saving you money.

“Turning your thermostat up while not home costs money”

This is just simply not true. If you are not home, then your home doesn’t need to be your comfortable 68 degrees because you aren’t there to enjoy it! Some people believe it costs more to cool your home back down, but unless you let it heat up to 90 degrees, that’s not true. Turning your thermostat up about 10 degrees when you leave the house is a great way to save money.

“Turning your air conditioner down helps cool the home faster”

If you want to cool your home down quickly—let’s say, to 68 degrees—you may think you should turn the thermostat down to 50 so it will cool faster. Unfortunately, air conditioners don’t work this way. The only thing turning your thermostat down to freezing cold temperatures will do is make your air conditioner run longer because that is how the system cools your home. It doesn’t simply produce cooler air, it just runs for longer. Don’t forget about your thermostat setting, or you could be wasting a lot of money.

“You can put your thermostat anywhere”

The area where you install your thermostat is crucial not only for even cooling, but for energy efficiency. Ideally, it is installed in a central location. The living room is best, but any room where your spend most of your time is good too. Ask your J.R. Perkins Heating & Cooling technician where the best location for your home’s thermostat is.
