There has been a lot of talk about ductless air conditioning and the impressive energy efficiency that comes with it. If your air conditioning unit is reaching the end of its lifespan, you may be interested to go ductless with your next air conditioning purchase. However, is there a benefit to going ductless if you already have ducts in your home? We asked our trusted JR Perkins Heating & Cooling technicians and wanted to include their thoughts in this blog post.

While ductless AC systems are perfect for homes that don’t have ducts installed, they can work really well in any home. What you get with a ductless system is that superior zone control. This means a ductless system can keep the temperature at a comfortable level in its zone. This requires multiple installations to cool the whole home, but because you can keep it warmer in rooms you are not in so often, it becomes more efficient.

However, installing ductless AC in multiple rooms can be a serious expense. If you are going for a mini-split system that requires an outdoor unit, it can actually end up more expensive than replacing the outdoor unit of your central cooling system.

In truth, if you already have ducts, you will likely just want to replace your outdoor unit. You can talk to your JR Perkins Heating & Cooling HVAC technician about your options for zone control and energy efficiency in your new system without going ductless. You may even be able to use a sort of combination of ducted and ductless cooling to get the optimum amount of comfort in your home.

Switching to ductless systems when you have perfectly healthy ducts installed in your home can be an expense that you may not necessarily reap benefits from. It is an interesting cooling technology, but central cooling systems are still the great workhorse of the home that you will want to take advantage of if your house is already set up for it.
